The United States Department of Justice sent a letter to Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes this month, reprimanding him for ordering the US video platform Rumble to block the accounts of a specific user, according to a copy of the document obtained by The New York Times, as reported by the newspaper on Thursday (29). The report, however, does not mention the user.
The Department of Justice said that Moraes can enforce laws in Brazil but cannot order companies to take specific actions in the US, according to the report, which also states that “Moraes preferred not to comment”.
“It is not clear whether the US has already taken or plans to take any action against Moraes,” the report further highlights.
Potential sanctions against Brazilian Judiciary members by the administration of US President Donald Trump could destabilize bilateral relations between the two countries, already strained since the Republican’s election, according to the newspaper’s analysis.
Moraes is the rapporteur of the coup plot inquiry at the STF. The Court indicted Jair Bolsonaro, a Trump ally, for leading the coup attempt after the election of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
