After more than five decades together, Aerosmith has announced a farewell tour. The band’s website lists the dates for the “Peace Out” tour, which kicks off in Philadelphia this September.
“After 50 years, 10 world tours, and playing for over 100 million fans… It’s time for one last hurrah!” the band wrote on Instagram.
They will be joined by The Black Crowes on the tour, which will have 39 stops. “Every night will celebrate five decades of Aerosmith’s groundbreaking hits as they commemorate 50 years as America’s greatest rock band,” says the Instagram post.
“It’s not a goodbye, it’s PEACE OUT! Get ready and walk this way, you will have the best show of our lives,” the group said in a statement.
The five band members, which include lead vocalist Steven Tyler, drummer Joey Kramer, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, and Tom Hamilton on bass, are all in their 70s. They started in 1970 in Boston and have won four Grammys – Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group for “Janie’s Got a Gun” in 1991, “Livin’ on the Edge” in 1994, “Crazy” in 1995, and “Crazy” in 1999.
In 2012, the band spoke with Lara Logan on CBS News’ “60 Minutes” about their tumultuous 40 years together. “I think my perfectionism and my blow-ups with everyone is what got this band to where it is today,” said lead vocalist Steven Tyler.
“There’s no doubt about Steven’s greatness. When you ask what makes the band great, I think it’s a combination of all of us,” said drummer Joey Kramer.
“I think a lot of it is that Tyler is incredibly competitive. You know he’s competitive with us. With every band member,” said bassist Tom Hamilton.
If you’re a rock fan and have never seen Aerosmith perform live, here’s a great and final opportunity.
