In the election held in June at the Interpol Executive Committee in Lyon, Federal Police Commissioner Valdecy Urquiza was appointed as the next Secretary-General of Interpol, with a term from 2024 to 2029. The appointment by the Executive Committee must be ratified by the General Assembly of the organization, to be held in November. This will be the first time in its one hundred years of history that Interpol will be led by a national from a developing country.
The election of Commissioner Urquiza reflects the high priority given by the Brazilian government to combating transnational organized crime, in which international cooperation is increasingly essential. It also represents international recognition of the professionalism and competence of the Brazilian Federal Police in fighting crime, as well as its significant contribution to Interpol’s work.
The successful campaign for Mr. Urquiza’s election as Secretary-General was the result of close coordination between the Federal Police, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
Commissioner Valdecy Urquiza currently holds the position of Director of International Cooperation at the Federal Police and has extensive experience in promoting international police cooperation. In addition to serving as Vice-President for the Americas on the Interpol Executive Committee since 2021, he also served as Deputy Director for Vulnerable Communities from 2018 to 2021.
Commissioner Urquiza’s candidacy focused on promoting diversity and modernization within Interpol, as well as strengthening the transparency and integrity of the organization, with the aim of reinforcing its crucial role in police cooperation and combating crime worldwide.
