3rd Annual International Choro Festival

From November 9 to 12, 2017, those who appreciate the genuine sound of Brazilian instrumental music will have the opportunity to enjoy the 3rd Annual “International Choro Festival” in New York City. The Brazilian Music Foundation (BMF), in partnership with Asuos Productions, will present the III Annual International Choro Festival (ChoroFest), featuring a variety of interesting performances.

The Festival collaborators aim to engage different cultures in an exchange of artistic talents between the USA and Brazil. The Festival will pay tribute to Chiquinha Gonzaga, one of the most important female figures in Brazilian popular music of all time. And as in Brazil, “everything ends in samba,” it will also celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Samba. Chiquinha Gonzaga was the first “choro” pianist and the most important female figure in Brazilian popular music of all time; she was an independent woman in times of extreme prejudice and earned her money with her own music. Her songs were hugely successful, resulting in an international career and music that is still commonly used.

The Festival aims to promote and preserve “Choro” – the oldest Brazilian musical style and part of Brazil’s rich instrumental music tradition since the 19th century across all regions of the country. The festival brings together local and Brazilian musicians presenting traditional Choro and new compositions.

The festival will kick off the Latin American Cultural Week (LACW) on November 10 – 8 PM at the Baruch Performing Arts Center. Since 2006, Pamar has presented the Annual Latin American Cultural Week with the goal of bringing the richness and diversity of various Latin American cultures to the general public.

“Classical Meets Popular”

The highlight of this year is the performance by the BMF String Orchestra, which will play compositions by Wagner Tiso (pianist/composer/conductor) and Alberto Rosenblit (pianist/composer), who will perform at the Festival. The Sexteto Gaúcho from Porto Alegre, Brazil (photo) and special guests from the Netherlands and Switzerland will play popular classical Choro and new compositions.
