Piauí: Serra da Capivara National Park

Located in the Northeast region of Brazil, the Serra da Capivara National Park is an archaeological park, inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage list. A set of plateaus and valleys houses archaeological sites with rock paintings and engravings, as well as other remnants of prehistoric daily life.

On rugged terrain, in a semi-arid climate region, alternating periods of rain and drought promote strong changes in the landscape. At one moment, the vegetation is lush, and there is a surprising diversity of brightly colored flowers. At another, the vegetation dries and loses its leaves. It is then that the rock formations stand out against the stripped vegetation.Rock Art

The rock art, painted or engraved on the rock walls, are graphic forms of communication used by prehistoric groups that inhabited the region of the Park. The graphic representations cover a wide variety of shapes, colors, and themes. Scenes of hunting, sex, war, and various aspects of daily life and the symbolic universe of their authors were painted. The study of these records allows for the recognition of recurring themes and the identification of different ways to represent them. It can also be said that they are clues to the way of life of these populations.
