Situated on top of a hill, the small village of Trancoso is a district of Porto Seguro and one of the most sought-after locations on the Bahia coast. It is an ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of big cities and relax by the shores of paradisiacal beaches with fine sand and warm water.
Founded in 1586 by Jesuits, the town’s main attractions are its beaches, such as Itaquena and Patimirim, as well as the famous “Historical Square.” A square listed by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan), the Quadrado is filled with colorful little houses, inns, rustic and chic restaurants, and craft shops.
The best activity in Trancoso is to explore the beaches, where there are shacks where you can drink and eat typical Bahian snacks. Ten minutes from the village is Praia dos Coqueiros, with reefs that form natural pools at low tide, perfect for diving.
On the south bank of the Trancoso River lies the bustling Praia dos Nativos, where there are horseback riding tours and rentals for kayaks and surfboards. From Praia do Rio Verde to Espelho, there are 16 km of deserted sands, passing by the Points of Itaquena and Itapororoca, and the Barra do Rio dos Frades, where the river runs parallel to the beach.
In the opposite direction, towards Arraial d’Ajuda, there are more deserted stretches and another good place for freshwater bathing: Praia do Rio da Barra. In the late afternoon, one must not miss the sunset at the viewpoint of the Church.
A few years ago, Trancoso gained new accommodations. There are charming little houses where you can stay more privately and host friends, without giving up hotel services, such as having breakfast ready the next morning and the house cleaned.
The town also has high-level golf courses, surrounded by dense Atlantic Forest, cliffs, and dunes, with a spectacular view of the sea, making the experience even more sensational.
The nearest airport to Trancoso is Porto Seguro Airport, located 47 km away, which receives regular flights from major Brazilian cities.
The nearest international airport is in Salvador, which is 755 km away and receives direct flights from Frankfurt, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Miami, and Lisbon. For more information on tickets and packages, call BACC Travel at (212) 730-1010.
