Iowa: Little-known attractions and iconic landmarks

Iowa is the only state that borders two navigable rivers (the Missouri and Mississippi rivers) and two National Scenic Byways (the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway and the Great River Road). Amid all this, the state is filled with unique and renowned destinations, including the birthplace of President Herbert Hoover and his library, the Historic Park Inn hotel (the last remaining hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright), and the largest bull statue in the world.

Plan a trip through the heart of the United States including Iowa’s 1,900 kilometers of trails. About 10,000 cyclists ride in RAGBRAI, short for the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, a seven-day event that takes place in July.

Enjoy boat rides on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, go rafting at Riverfront Park in Charles City, and spot bald eagles at Mosquito Park in Burlington. Visit a family farm in Dyersville, where the classic baseball movie Field of Dreams was filmed. And don’t forget Sample Fair, the 1930s love story inspired by the Iowa State Fair.

Artist Grant Wood, known for the iconic image “American Gothic,” depicting a woman next to a man holding a pitchfork in front of a farmhouse, was born in Iowa. The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art has the largest collection of his works. Take a photo in the studio where he lived and worked from 1924 to 1934.

In Shelby, see a 23-foot tall steel sculpture of an ear of corn.
