The disease is responsible for thousands of hospitalizations in Brazil and around the world. It occurs due to the improper formation of clots in the veins of the leg, known as deep vein thrombosis, and in the heart, called atrial fibrillation.
Thrombosis can result in swelling, wounds, and chronic infections in the affected limb. It can also cause pulmonary embolism, which occurs when the clot (or thrombus) detaches from the walls of the veins and is carried by the bloodstream until it lodges in the blood vessels of the lung.
Causes
The use of contraceptives or hormone therapy is among the main causes of the problem. For this reason, it is essential to check if a woman has any tendency to develop thrombosis before using the medication.
Smoking, the presence of varicose veins, advanced age, patients with heart failure, malignant tumors, obesity, hereditary or acquired hypercoagulability disorders, and a previous history of venous thrombosis are among the risk factors.
Pregnant women and people with prolonged immobilization (paralysis, acute myocardial infarction, long air travel) are also more susceptible to thrombosis.
Symptoms
Deep vein thrombosis can be completely asymptomatic. When present, the main symptoms are: pain, heat, redness, and stiffness of the muscles in the area where the thrombus has formed.
Regular physical exercise, avoiding alcohol and smoking, and maintaining a balanced diet are the main ways to prevent thrombosis.
Important Care During Air Travel
– Take short walks every hour
– Move your feet and legs while seated
– Wear comfortable and loose clothing during the journey
– Stay hydrated with plenty of water
– Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages in general
– Avoid using sedatives and sleeping pills
– If you have any mobility difficulties, prioritize aisle seats
– Travelers, especially those with venous insufficiency or varicose veins, should use elastic compression stockings (under medical prescription)
– People with risk factors for thrombosis (obesity, use of contraceptives, sedentary lifestyle, age over 40, chronic disease, smoking, recent surgery, trauma, pregnancy, personal or family history of thrombosis) should schedule an appointment with a specialist for prevention with the use of stockings and anticoagulant medication
– For those intolerant to the use of appropriate stockings, a new electronic device may replace the accessory during travel
