Have you ever stopped to think about how a party as big as BR Day NY is produced? Even with over 30 years of experience, the task is anything but simple. And as the party grows, so does the responsibility.
As you can imagine, for the audience of over a million people to enjoy themselves on the Sunday before Labor Day, the event organizers start preparing for the next edition as soon as the current year’s event ends. They begin by thinking about which artists to bring next year, and for that, the organizers are always keeping their eyes and ears open to know what is popular in Brazil and what people here in the United States would like to see and hear.
Throughout the year, there is a coordinated effort among the institutions involved in organizing the event. BR Day is co-produced by businessman João de Matos, who is also the founder of the event; by The Brasilians newspaper, the oldest and highest circulation Portuguese-language publication in the United States; with the support of TV Globo.
Although everything is very well planned, it is on the day of the event that everything happens in practice. First, it is necessary to close 6th Avenue. Of course, it is the city of New York that does this precisely at 11:59 PM on Saturday. Then begins a race against the clock to set up the stage. Anyone who has seen BR Day up close knows that the stage is huge, meaning that erecting a structure like that is a job only for masters.
With the stage ready, it’s time to set up and test the sound equipment. It should be noted here that BR Day is a street party
with various musical attractions, meaning more than one artist takes the stage. The responsible team has to arrange everything considering that there will be band changes and also breaks. Again, this is a job for a super competent and experienced team that never drops the ball. After all, can anyone think of BR Day without good sound and good music?
Meanwhile, the VIP area behind and on the sides of the stage is also being set up. To cater to the VIP audience with that special care, the production practically installs an open-air kitchen, with a refrigerator, stove, tables, chairs, and everything else necessary to make this audience’s experience even more satisfying.
Along 6th Avenue and Little Brazil, the work is also relentless. Since 6 AM, exhibitors begin to bring their products and set up their stalls. Many of them have participated in BR Day for many years, and it is thanks to them that the event has everything we need to satisfy our cravings for Brazilian cuisine: pastel with sugarcane juice, chicken coxinha with catupiry, acarajé, guaraná, açaí, and so many other Brazilian delights
that, depending on where you live, are not so easy to find.
The organization of the vendors and the rental of street spaces is the responsibility of Mardi Gras Festival Productions, LTD. If you are interested in exhibiting a product during BR Day NY, contact them at (212) 809-4900.
Of course, the best part of the party starts at 11 AM on Sunday, when everything is ready to welcome the audience not only from New York but also from various other states. Many arrive via caravans, which are organized months before the event. But if you are interested in getting to know a little more about the behind-the-scenes of this great party, arrive early, walk along 6th Avenue, and find a spot closer to the stage. You will be impressed by how everything is done with enormous attention and dedication from highly qualified professionals.
