New Technologies and the Access Economy – The Brasilians

New Technologies and the Access Economy

In this article, we will share with you some truths about new ways to “Generate Income” in the United States, and to identify this new wave or trend, Americans have started to associate the term “access economy” or “sharing economy”. The American magazine The Economist, which covers finance, business, and politics, described this trend a few years ago as a “boom that marks a significant and transformative new stage”.The fact is that the initial uses of smartphones and platforms to provide work and services in a variety of new ways have challenged many of the fundamental assumptions of 20th-century capitalism, from the nature of the company to the structure of careers.

The terms “Sharing Economy” or “Access Economy” can have various synonyms: technology-based capitalism, market sharing, collaborative consumption, access economy, collaborative economy, and even, “1099 economy” which is more familiar to Americans themselves. In its simplest form, the access economy consists of hundreds of online platforms that allow people to turn inactive or unproductive periods into income generators using houses, cars, parking spots, clothes, consumables, pets, hobbies, etc.

In other words, it is the economic activity that involves individuals buying or selling access, usually temporary, to goods or services, especially mediated through an online organization or company. As a result, the access economy has been a major disruptor to traditional industries, such as the automotive and real estate industries, among others. One of the main reasons for this “disruption” of large companies has been the ease of access to markets, which were normally controlled by large corporations.

Among some of the main companies participating in this new wave are AirBnb, Uber, Lyft, LendingClub, Task-Rabbit, and Postmates, among others.

These companies that have embraced this system understand that consumers are much more interested in minimizing costs and increasing convenience than dealing with traditional market forms and brands. In many cases, consumers are not as interested in the collaborative aspect, but in the cost-benefit relationship. In the new access economy, these platforms act as intermediaries between consumers and service providers. The people providing these services, in many ways, are entrepreneurs or micro-entrepreneurs. They are self-employed, more independent and free, and a bit more competent, economically speaking.

The access economy is the fundamental shift from a principle of scarcity to a principle of abundance, and how we can capitalize on this abundance. About 1 in 5 Americans have already made a transaction to fit into this access economy. Of these, 86% stated that the access economy makes their lives more accessible. Being able to avoid dealing with traditional systems and companies has been great for these new “micro-entrepreneurs”. This creates new markets and changes the mindset.

The access economy transforms millions of people into micro-entrepreneurs who can use different platforms to make money. Furthermore, they can use part-time or full-time in different ways. For example, someone with a full-time job, even if they work all day, can rent out their entire apartment or just a room using Airbnb. On the other hand, another person can use their free time partially to use their car and make money with Uber or Lyft. The fact is that this new wave has created a new perspective for those looking to become “micro-business owners”. You can transform your assets and/or your time and/or your creativity into income streams.LINDENBERG JUNIOR
