The Adventures of Tom Sawyer – The Brasilians

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is narrated in the third person, very well written and fluid. Mark Twain values simplicity, which makes everything easy to understand, considering it is a children’s book. The author makes clear the innocence and naivety of the characters, especially Tom Sawyer, something that defines the story well, as the protagonist, despite showing some “cruel” attitudes and behaviors , is actually a good-hearted boy. This innocence present in the plot is not something easily found in books aimed at children and teenagers today, as evidenced by Tom and his friends’ games, which demonstrate the boys’ poor reality, the lack of toys, where everything boiled down to the boys’ creativity in making use of their imagination or the things around them. Mark Twain also makes room to criticize the greed and hypocrisy present in humanity. But it is also very cool to see the explicit innocence of the children that permeates the entire story.

Whether the main character or the secondary ones, Twain shows us how good, innocent, and healthy the games of children and teenagers of that time were. Love, camaraderie, the spirit of adventure, and character are explicitly used to give values to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Obviously, as mentioned before, the flawed part of humanity is also explored to show that not everything is perfect, but this, in a way, only strengthens the message of kindness, friendship, and love conveyed in this great story. It is impossible to not say that The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, an absolute classic of children’s literature, is a MUST-READ book, and everyone should read it!

About the Author: Samuel Langhorn Clemens, known as Mark Twain, was born in Florida on November 30, 1835. Twain was an American writer and grew up along the banks of the Mississippi River. He was an adventurer and used his own personal experiences as inspiration to write his books and essays.
