Kidney Transplant – The Brasilians

Kidney Transplant

Transplantation is the only therapeutic modality that always requires the participation of society. Donation is a form of social insurance, as we all run the risk of needing an organ for ourselves or for someone in our family. What is a kidney transplant?
The transplant is a surgical procedure that involves the transfer of a healthy organ (heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, liver) or tissue (bone marrow, bones, corneas) from one individual, living or deceased, to another person, in order to compensate for or replace a lost function. Thus, in a kidney transplant, a healthy kidney is implanted in an individual with end-stage renal failure. This new kidney will take over the functions that the diseased kidneys can no longer maintain. A kidney transplant may involve one or both kidneys if it is from a deceased donor, and only one if it is from a living donor. In most cases, only one kidney is transplanted.
Fortunately, renal replacement therapy, usually hemodialysis, can keep people alive for many years. However, the advantages of transplantation for these patients are indisputable, as it increases survival and greatly improves the quality of life for chronic kidney disease patients.Approach in case of brain death
The donation of your organs and tissues after death is a right of every citizen who dies from brain death. Therefore, it should be offered to family members by trained health system agents for these clarifications and for supporting the family in their doubts and decisions, whenever there are no contraindications that compromise the health of the recipients. Leaks of information about hospitalized patients are not allowed, and even less should their family members be sought out and pressured to donate organs and tissues. This type of conduct is illegal, as the confidentiality of the donor’s identity is guaranteed.
Brain death is a diagnosis that is standardized and, being conclusive regarding the death of any person, must be communicated by the hospital management or their representatives to the health authorities.Source: blog.saude.gov.br
