Remembering Carnival at the Waldorf Astoria – The Brasilians

Remembering Carnival at the Waldorf Astoria

I was studying in Washington, D.C. and working a few hours a day at our embassy. During Carnival in 1974, I reserved a table, which ended up being identified with the name of the embassy, and perhaps because of that, we were given a table on the dance floor. There were seven Brazilian friends, all students, and we went to the ball at the Waldorf Astoria hotel.

I met the “odalisque” at the ball itself, and shortly after, a photographer asked if he could take a picture. We agreed. The ball ended and I never saw her again.

In February of the following year, I married my first wife. On the day I returned from the honeymoon, my boss, who was staying at the Argentina hotel in Rio de Janeiro, saw the newspaper at the reception. He picked up a copy and took it to work. Suddenly, I was working normally in my office when all the employees (about 25) entered my room and “confronted” me with the photo. The teasing was immense. I confess I felt very embarrassed.

No, the story didn’t end there. Minutes after this “confrontation,” I was summoned to a meeting with my boss and his boss. Everything went well, but my wife decided to pay a visit that very day and take me out to lunch.

The thing is, I had folded the newspaper containing the photo and placed it in my first drawer. When my wife arrived, the secretary very kindly took her to my desk, and she sat in my chair. As women are generally more curious than men, guess what she did? That’s right, she opened the drawer and saw the “crime” recorded in the newspaper. You can’t imagine the “goat” that happened. But finally, everything ended well.
