US Opens Frontiers in Science with Artificial Intelligence

Computers programmed to think and respond like humans, only faster, are already being used with the goal of diagnosing diseases, driving cars, and predicting natural disasters. And artificial intelligence (AI) is only set to become more powerful.

Recognizing the importance of AI, President Trump announced the US Artificial Intelligence Initiative. The goal is to promote AI research and development and provide ethical guidelines for the industry.

“Continued American leadership in artificial intelligence is of utmost importance for maintaining the economic and national security of the United States,” declared President Trump.

The initiative has five areas of focus:

• Invest in AI research and development through government agencies and support for the private and academic sectors;

• Free up government resources, such as federal data and computer models;

• Develop standards and guidelines for the future of AI research;

• Build the AI workforce by creating scholarships and training programs aimed at helping professionals acquire relevant skills in AI;

• Engage with the international community to develop an environment that supports AI research while protecting intellectual property.

The next generation of AI will have a huge impact on people’s lives, from transforming healthcare services to streamlining supply chains, to improving education.

That is why the initiative encourages the development of AI and sets the path for developing guidelines and rules to ensure that the technology is not misused.

Michael Kratsios, White House Chief Technology Officer, said in an article for Wired magazine: “The US Artificial Intelligence Initiative is based on the fundamental principle that in the United States, AI should never be used to the detriment of our civil liberties and all forms of freedom.”
