KiteSurf in the Parnaíba Delta Featured in U.S. Media

The Washington Post published an article titled: “Along the Northeast Coast of Brazil, a Kitesurf Safari.” The text highlights the great potential of the Parnaíba Delta for the practice of the sport and emphasizes that the region is the “perfect equation for kitesurfing.” The publication, illustrated with beautiful photos, is authored by American journalist John Briley, who traveled to Brazil with support from Embratur (Brazilian Institute of Tourism).

The institute promotes coordination and assists with information, supplies for the trip, contact with local partners, and tips about the itinerary. According to the president of Embratur, the support is part of the institute’s responsibilities in promoting Brazil’s tourist potential internationally, as well as strengthening Brazil’s image as a tourist destination.

“The dissemination of reports about Brazil’s potential for Adventure Tourism is important to showcase the diversification of our tourist offerings, in addition to impacting strategic source markets and thus attracting more foreign tourists to our country. The Parnaíba Delta and the entire northeastern coast attest to the attractiveness of our destinations for this audience,” explains Teté Bezerra.

In the text, the journalist describes, in rich detail, his sporting experience in the Parnaíba Delta. He highlights the contrast between the isolation along the deserted beaches and the hotel infrastructure with resorts, hotels, and inns, where the group of tourists had access to gastronomy, especially featuring fish, seafood, and typical Brazilian drinks with a northeastern twist, such as passion fruit caipirinha.

Moreover, the journalist recalls the hospitality of the Brazilian people, from fishermen to children. The expedition began at the Parnaíba River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean between the cities of Parnaíba and Atins, “along a coast that has been rising since prehistoric times.”

Parnaíba Delta

In geography, a delta is defined as the mouth of a river formed by several channels or arms of the riverbed that flow into the sea. In the case of the Parnaíba, this characteristic has resulted in one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.

The Parnaíba Delta, located between the states of Maranhão and Piauí, concentrates natural beauties that are still little explored and have sufficient potential to meet and even exceed the expectations of international tourists. This phenomenon occurs similarly in the Nile River in Africa.

The Parnaíba River rises in the Mangabeiras plateau and its course stretches 1,400 km, extending into five arms between the two states, forming a tangle of rivers, igarapés, and about 80 islands. The best time to visit the Parnaíba Delta for kitesurfing is between July and December, during the wind season.
