Brazilian ballerina, Ingrid da Silva, held the eighth edition of the women-focused event, EmpowHer, in Manhattan, New York, with ‘Sex’ as the theme.
In an exclusive interview, Ingrid shares that the idea for the event came from the desire to create a space and community where women could have their voices and opinions heard.
Each edition has a different theme. This one was about sex, because it is still a taboo in society today. And, according to Ingrid, it shouldn’t be, as it is such a normal topic yet rarely discussed openly.
“The choice of themes is made based on the needs of our platform, what the audience is looking for. We receive suggestions and decide what works,” explains the ballerina.
The event is organized through the event’s Instagram @empoweher_ny and is also a great platform to help women, especially Brazilians, living in NY who are starting a business.
During the week, takeovers are done, which are a day in the life of each woman. She has access for 24 hours to share her day and promote her work.
Ingrid was the first black Brazilian to be hired by the Dance Theater of Harlem and has lived in NY for over 10 years.
Born in an underprivileged community in Rio de Janeiro, she states that the crisis in culture has always existed. “I believe that the crisis in art has always been there. Art itself is undervalued in our country.”
She adds that being black means facing prejudice daily anywhere. However, now that she is recognized for her work, the appreciation from the audience is captivating.
Her dream is to one day bring EmpowHer NY to Brazil, as the results after the event have been very rewarding, with all participants feeling empowered.VIVIANE FAVER
