Virginia Beach, a destination of sun, sea, and fresh water

If you’re looking for natural paradises like those in South Florida or the cosmopolitan fun of Miami, don’t waste your time visiting Virginia Beach. The city is an interesting beach resort for a long weekend of relaxation and especially family beach activities.

Although it has beach in its name, the city is not limited to just one beach. Virginia Beach and other neighboring cities have numerous beaches that stretch along Chesapeake Bay. They are beautiful beaches, with clean sand and pleasantly warm water – at least in the summer months.

It’s definitely worth leaving the main and most well-known beach to visit others that are farther away, yet even more pleasant and less crowded, like Sandbridge Beach.

As famous as the main beach is the extensive boardwalk, filled with restaurants, bars, and of course, hotels. For those who enjoy seaside resorts, Virginia Beach offers plenty of them. They are not as luxurious as those in Atlantic City, for example, but they come equipped with pools, spas, fitness centers, private beaches, and ocean views.

However, they are not so cheap. A night in one of these hotels can cost over $350 during peak season, which is in June, July, and August.

An alternative for those who don’t want to spend that amount is to stay in hotels outside the boardwalk, or even rent a vacation home. In this case, if you’re traveling by car, try not to stay too far from the beach. The hassle of parking can drive anyone crazy.

Another option is to visit Virginia Beach outside of peak season. Forget winter, of course! During this time, temperatures can drop significantly and approach zero. But a more affordable possibility is to visit the city in May or September, when the weather is pleasant, the kids are still in school, the city is less crowded, and prices are much more attractive.

Virginia Beach is not just about beach activities. If it rains, don’t pack your bags and hit the road. There are cultural attractions like the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art and – if you’re up for a drive of about an hour – the colonial city of Williamsburg. This is where the first permanent settlement of colonizers in the United States was established.

Still in Williamsburg, there are two theme parks, Bush Gardens and the water park, Water Country. If you’re traveling in a group, it’s guaranteed fun.

Finally, there’s no way not to mention the local cuisine. There is an abundant offer of restaurants specializing in seafood. The best part is that you can eat well and cheaply.

Although Virginia Beach is not usually listed among the best beach destinations in the United States, the city thrives on tourism, welcoming around six million people annually. More than 80% of them say they will return on another occasion.

In addition to the attractions already described, the location is also one of the reasons so many people choose the city for a long weekend or a few days of relaxation. Virginia Beach is just three and a half hours south of Washington DC and a short drive from several cities in the eastern regions of the United States.

Even though it may not be the most beautiful and lively, Virginia Beach can be a fun destination for sun, sea, and fresh water.
