Leila Diniz – The Brasilians

Leila Roque Diniz was born in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, on March 25, 1945.

Rebellious, she ran away from home at 14 to live with an aunt.

In 1962, at the age of 17, Leila met filmmaker Domingos de Oliveira, and they lived together until 1965. During this time, she worked as a commercial model and later acted in children’s theater plays such as “Em Busca do Tesouro.”

In 1963, she worked as a chorus girl in a show by Carlos Machado. She also worked in the films “O Mundo Alegre de Helô” and “Jogo Perigoso.” In 1964, she performed in the theater in “O Preço de Um Homem,” alongside Cacilda Becker.

In 1965, already separated from Domingos de Oliveira, she married filmmaker Ruy Guerra, during which time she began her career on TV and acted in several soap operas.

In 1966, she starred in the film “Todas as Mulheres do Mundo,” directed by Domingos de Oliveira, which was a great success with both the public and critics.

Leila received the “Air France Best Actress Award” in 1967. She said, “Success is frightening, but it also whets the appetite.”

She then acted in soap operas: “A Rainha Louca” (1967), “O Direito dos Filhos” (1968), and in the films: “Fome de Amor” (1968) and “Edu Coração de Ouro” (1969).

In 1969, when the newspaper “O Pasquim” published her famous interview, the pages were filled with asterisks, covering the swear words that censorship had suppressed. In the interview, the actress spoke about her views on love and sex, shocking society.

That same year, Leila revitalized the most popular genre, revue theater, when dressed as Carmem Miranda, she shone in the fun and spicy presentation of “Tem Banana na Banda.”

In the play, Leila improvised texts by Millôr Fernandes, Luiz Carlos Maciel, José Wilker, and Oduvaldo Viana Filho. She was given the title of Queen of the Vedetes by Virgínia Lane.

At the end of 1970, pregnant with her first daughter, she was photographed wearing a small bikini, strolling on the sands of Ipanema beach, which caused a shock to the conservative society of the time.

During the carnival of 1971, she was elected Queen of the Banda de Ipanema. On November 19, 1971, her long-desired daughter Janaína Diniz Guerra was born.

In 1972, she debuted in the revue theater show, “Vem de Ré.”

In June 1972, Leila went to Australia with the Brazilian delegation for an award at the Melbourne film festival.

Missing her daughter, who was then seven months old, she returned home early, taking a Japan Airlines flight that crashed in India, leaving no survivors.

Leila Diniz passed away in New Delhi, India, on June 14, 1972.
