Produced by Rodrigo Teixeira (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME), the Psychological Thriller featuring Darío Grandinetti (TALK TO HER) and Débora Falabella, is an emotional portrait of the creative process and the lengths one is willing to go for their art

Welcome, Violeta! (Bem-vinda, Violeta!), the second feature film by Brazilian director and screenwriter Fernando Fraiha, produced by Rodrigo Teixeira (Call Me By Your Name; The Witch; The Lighthouse), has its world premiere in the Narrative Feature competition at the 2022 Brooklyn Film Festival, taking place in-person and online from June 3 to June 12 in New York.

Loosely inspired by the novel Cordilheiras by Daniel Galera, Welcome, Violeta! stars renowned Argentine actor Darío Grandinetti (Talk to Her; Rojo) as Holden, the charismatic leader of a writing residency deep in the Andes mountains of Argentina. The film tells the story of Ana (played by Brazilian actress Débora Falabella), a young woman eager to complete her novel Violeta at the well-known literary laboratory “End of the World.”

During her stay at the remote residency, Ana becomes increasingly familiar with Holden’s idiosyncratic methods, which require participating artists to abandon their own identities and live emotionally and psychologically as their characters. Captivated by his artistic investigation, Ana fully immerses herself in the method and begins to live as Violeta, until her fiction spirals out of control.

Referencing the director’s own experiences when he was young and involved with a group of artists with cult-like traits, Welcome, Violeta! skillfully explores the intersections of creativity, vulnerability, personal identity, and the potential for emotional and ideological coercion when someone fully surrenders to their craft. With stellar performances from Falabella and Grandinetti alongside captivating cinematography and sound design, the psychological thriller brings together a team of internationally renowned actors from Brazil and Argentina and confirms Fraiha as a talent to watch in the director’s chair.

Brooklyn Film Festival Screenings:
