Germany lost its opening match in the World Cup against Japan on Wednesday, November 23, joining Argentina in the list of Cup Upsets. The favorites may not be as dominant on the field as they thought.
The defeat of Germany by 2-1 to Japan came a day after Argentina was defeated by Saudi Arabia in one of the biggest surprises in the tournament’s history.
Japan, in turn, made history. This is the first victory in World Cup history for the Japanese by overturning a losing score. The Germans started the match strong with a goal from Gundogan, but the miracles of goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda, along with goals from Doan and Asano, secured the victory for the Asian team.
Germany, one of the favorites for the title, played a good first half but ultimately got lost against the Japanese defense and allowed the comeback.
Both teams will be back on the field on Sunday. Germany will face Spain, and Japan will take on the Costa Rica national team.
