American Photographer Gathers 2,500 People for Photo Shoot. Detail: All Nude

About 2,500 people stripped down for a photo shoot at Bondi Beach in Australia last Saturday, November 26. The aim is to raise awareness about the incidence of skin cancer.

The crowd gathered to be part of the latest work by American photographer Spencer Tunick, known for conducting photo shoots of nude people at significant landmarks around the world.

“We have the opportunity to raise awareness about skin cancer and I am honored… to come here, make my art and just celebrate the body and protection,” Tunick told Reuters.

This is Tunick’s fourth project in Australia. The last one was a photo shoot in 2010 that gathered about 5,500 people at the famous Sydney Opera House.

In this project, he is partnering with Skin Check Champions, a charity that runs free and educational clinics for skin checks and skin cancer prevention.

Tunick has taken more than 100 photos with nude crowds in public locations around the world, from Munich to Mexico City, where he managed to capture 18,000 nude participants.

But these photos are not easy to take. While thousands of volunteers strip down, it is known that municipal authorities intervene, which has led to Tunick’s arrest on several occasions.

The artist has even been at the center of a dispute between the Supreme Court of the United States and then-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who believed the city would be “irreparably harmed” if one of Tunick’s sessions were held there.

Well, Tunick held a photo shoot with 450 nude women at Grand Central in New York City in October 2003. And after that? The city continued its crazy and bustling life as always.
