Declaring that the central cause of the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol was “one man,” the House committee investigating the incident delivered its final report on Thursday, December 23, detailing how former President Donald J. Trump executed what lawmakers called “a multi-part plan to overturn the 2020 presidential election.”
The authors of the investigation revealed new evidence regarding Trump’s conduct and recommended that Congress consider the possibility of barring Trump and his allies from holding public office in the future.
“The central cause of January 6 was one man, former President Donald Trump, whom many others followed,” the report stated. “None of the events of January 6 would have happened without him.”
The release of the full report was the culmination of an 18-month investigation and came three days after the committee voted to formally charge Trump with inciting insurrection, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and obstruction of an act of Congress. The report was referred to the Department of Justice for possible prosecution. Although the referrals do not compel federal prosecutors to take any action, they sent a powerful signal that a congressional committee believes the former president committed crimes.
The 845-page report was based on more than 1,000 interviews, collected documents, including emails, texts, and phone records.
