Pelosi Era Comes to an End and Republicans Lack Unanimity in Choosing a New Leader

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has decided not to seek reelection for her leadership position, ending a two-decade run as the top Democrat and the first woman to lead the House.

Pelosi stated that she will remain a member of Congress and fulfill the term for which she was just reelected from the state of California.

She also mentioned that a recent attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi, by an intruder who broke into the lawmaker’s home with a hammer, influenced her decision to step down from leadership.

Her time in leadership was marked by many challenging episodes, but also many achievements. From the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, to the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, two events that tested her skills but also demonstrated her willingness to overcome political differences in times of crisis.

In between, there was a war in Iraq that she opposed, a harrowing financial crisis that she helped contain, the rise of the Tea Party movement that ousted her, the Trump presidency that she fought with two impeachments, a pandemic that threw Congress and the nation into turmoil, and finally, a triumphant legislative push during the first two years of President Biden’s term.

“The fact is that no other leader in modern times, Republican or Democrat, has wielded the gavel with such authority or achieved such consistent results,” said John A. Boehner, the Republican from Ohio who sparred with Pelosi in her role as minority leader, during the unveiling of the lawmaker’s official portrait last month. “Let me just say that you are a tough cookie.”

The First Black Leader

The Democrats have chosen the caucus chair, Hakeem Jeffries, from New York, to succeed Nancy Pelosi as the leader of the Democrats in the House, a historic step that will make him the first Black person to lead one of the two major parties in either house of Congress.

Jeffries ran unopposed as leader, alongside Massachusetts Congresswoman Katherine Clark. At 52, he will represent a generational shift in Democratic leadership in the House, with most members being three decades older than him. Jeffries secured the chairmanship of the Democratic caucus in 2019, becoming the youngest member to serve in the party’s leadership.

Republicans Have a Majority, But No Leader in the House

The Republicans gained a narrow majority in the House of Representatives in the November elections. However, as of Wednesday afternoon (4th), the party had still not found unanimity in choosing a name to fill Nancy Pelosi’s seat.

The majority of Republicans support Congressman Kevin McCarthy from California, but four votes had been held by Wednesday afternoon, and the Party failed to gather the necessary votes (218) to confirm McCarthy’s name.

This choice of the majority leader in the House is already historic as it is the first time since 1923 that the Party needs multiple votes to have a leader. Since the House cannot proceed with other matters until it chooses its speaker, further votes will have to take place until someone reaches the magic number of 218 votes. This has only happened 14 times in the history of Congress.

The Republicans blocking McCarthy’s election are some of the far-right legislators in the House. Even with the support of former President Donald Trump, who made an appeal on behalf of the California Congressman, the Party’s most radical lawmakers did not yield.

It remains to be seen how this historic struggle in the House will unfold.
