Misogyny Grows in Brazil and Threatens Women

The Civil Police of São Paulo opened an investigation into the death threat made by the self-proclaimed relationship coach Thiago Schutz against actress and comedian Livia La Gatto.

Schutz is part of the RedPill movement, an anti-feminist group founded on the belief that society and nature favor women at the expense of men. They believe that feminism is harmful and reduce women to sexual objects.

The group claims that once you take the pill, that is, join the movement, you will finally realize that female oppression is nonexistent and that men are the only oppressed ones. Red-pillers believe that men and women are different in terms of evolution and, therefore, should adhere to gender roles. They believe that women belong at home, raising a family and being available for sex with men, while men go to work and support them.

Livia La Gatto made two videos on her social media using humor to highlight the absurdities expressed by these groups.

On social media, Thiago Schutz claimed that his threats – “if the actress did not remove content, she would get shot” – were meant to be taken figuratively and not literally. He stated that he does not own and does not carry a weapon.

In an interview with Agência Brasil, psychoanalyst Sabrina Arini says that the emergence of these groups is a reaction from some men against female emancipation and the fight for equal rights, which has taken away men’s prominent role in society. However, Arini emphasizes that it is necessary to work and engage in dialogue with this male frustration so that it does not turn into violence – whether against themselves or against society as a whole.

Sabrina Arini also sees another danger in the strengthening of misogynistic groups, which is the denial of reality through discourse – a tactic widely used by the far-right around the world.

“There’s the RedPill, which is the red pill from the Matrix movie, which is like saying that what you are seeing is not reality. The reality is what I will tell you. I will tell you, and I say what I want. It’s a strategy of the far-right in the world, which is to negotiate reality. We look at WhatsApp and read that the economy is doing great, and I go to the market and see that milk is more expensive. What I read is more important than what I am experiencing concretely. From the moment we no longer share a common reality, socially, this is very serious. I step out of the real, and the concept of stepping out of the real is madness,” explains Arini.
