Find Out If You Have Forgotten Money in Brazil. Withdrawals Start Next Week

On January 28, the Central Bank of Brazil reopened a consultation site for forgotten amounts in banks. Since then, over 5 million inquiries have been made to the system. However, the majority, 73.4%, did not find forgotten money. Meanwhile, 26.6% of the inquiries were positive, meaning there were funds to be retrieved.

The withdrawal of this money can be made starting March 7.

According to the BC, about 38 million individuals and 2 million legal entities have approximately R$ 6 billion to receive.

There is the possibility to consult amounts of deceased persons, accessible to heirs, executors, administrators, or legal representatives.
Sources of Funds

The new phase of the “System of Amounts to Receive (SVR)” included sources of forgotten funds that were not in last year’s batches. Closed prepaid or postpaid payment accounts, registered accounts maintained by brokers and distributors that were closed, and other resources available at institutions for refund have been added.

In addition to these sources, the SVR includes the following amounts, already available for withdrawals last year: closed checking or savings accounts; capital shares and distribution of net surpluses from former participants of credit cooperatives; unclaimed resources from closed consortium groups; improperly charged fees; and improperly charged installments or expenses from credit operations.

Unclaimed Money in the USA

Here in the United States, you can also collect forgotten money. New York, for example, currently has $17.5 billion in unclaimed money, which can include everything from checks, money orders, contents left in safes, among others.

The U.S. federal government does not have a central site for searching this unclaimed money like Brazil does, but you can find it on your own for free, using official databases or your state’s website.
