Are you traveling and your American passport has expired? You will need to plan for extra time to obtain your passport. According to the U.S. Department of State, it is currently taking 10 to 17 weeks to issue a passport due to high demand. If you pay an extra fee of $60, you can get it in seven to nine weeks.
Passport applications have increased by 30% compared to last year, according to the U.S. Department of State.
On March 24, the Department announced that any applications submitted from that date would take longer to process due to the increased demand.
But what if you have a trip scheduled for this summer?
You can visit a passport agency or center of the Department of State if you have a trip scheduled within the next 14 days.
The agencies and passport centers process routine and emergency applications and operate by appointment only for clients who have urgent international travel within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. You need to call to make an appointment at: 1-877-487-2778.
