Torrential Rains Flood the Northeast of the U.S.

Torrential rains caused widespread flooding in western New England and parts of New York state early Monday morning (10). Water invaded homes and left people trapped in vehicles.

In Vermont, authorities reported that at least 20 people were rescued by boat and dozens more evacuated from their homes. At least one person, a 30-year-old woman, died due to the flooding in New York.

The Hudson Valley region in New York felt the impact of the storm on Sunday, with up to 20 centimeters of rain recorded in some areas. Parts of the heavily trafficked Palisades Interstate Parkway were impassable, and several bridges collapsed.

The person who was killed in the Hudson Valley was trying to leave home while carrying a dog when she lost her balance and was swept away by the water.

Dozens of flights were canceled at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports in New York on Monday morning, according to FlightAware, a flight tracking service. More than 30 flights were also canceled at Boston Logan International Airport, and Amtrak services were suspended between New York and Albany on Monday.

The rains on Sunday and Monday were considered a 1 in 1000-year event for the Hudson Valley region, according to an analysis of historical rainfall frequency data from NOAA.

A rain event that occurs once in a millennium is so intense that the chances of it happening in any given year are just 0.1%.

Reading, Pennsylvania, received 5.35 inches of rain on Sunday, breaking its previous daily rainfall record of 3.47 inches set in 1952.
