New Identity Card Becomes Mandatory in Brazil

If you frequently travel to Brazil and still use your Brazilian documents, it’s good to keep an eye on the following news: Recently, the Federal Government decreed that all Brazilians will have to exchange their RG or traditional identity card for a new updated version of the document.

The goal is to create a unified registry and make the identity more modern and secure. The updated version will present the CPF as the sole identification number and has a digital format through the Gov.br app.

The document comes with a QR Code that can be read by any appropriate device, such as a smartphone – which will allow for electronic validation of its authenticity, as well as to check if it has been stolen or lost.

This new version of the identification document will also serve as a travel document, due to the inclusion of an international standard code called MRZ, the same used in passports.

So far, Brazil only has agreements for the use of the identity document at immigration posts with Mercosur countries. For other countries, the passport remains mandatory.
Security

Before the new identification document, it was possible for the same person to have an RG number for each state, in addition to the CPF. With the new card, the citizen will have one identification number, which reduces the possibility of fraud.

The new card is legally valid throughout the national territory and, if the citizen forgets the physical document, they can present the digital version on their cell phone.
Deadline for Exchange

State identification institutes will have until November 6 to comply with the new requirements and start issuing the new RG.

Brazilians have until mid-2032 to make the exchange.

The issuance process is conducted in person.
