A new model of the Brazilian passport began to be issued this Tuesday (3) in Brazil. The issuance of the new passport at embassies and consulates abroad will only occur in 2024.
There will be a transition period during which the current model and the new document will coexist. Passports issued in the current model remain valid until their expiration date.
The new family of Brazilian passports aims to enhance and modernize the security features of Brazilian travel documents.
Conceived by the Casa da Moeda do Brasil, in partnership with the Federal Police and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new document aims to identify travelers more securely and portray the nation’s identity through its most striking natural and cultural riches, now depicted on its pages. This is the first thematic passport in the country’s history.
According to the Casa da Moeda do Brasil, with the new passport, travelers will be able to take Brazil to the world and contribute to making the country known and respected both outside and within its borders.
The main changes include:
• Identification of document holders in other countries with greater security
• Increased number of watermarks
• Invisible fluorescent backgrounds
• The identification page has received important updates, featuring a ghost image of the holder’s photo in black and white, as well as a photo formed with biometric data of the holder
• For the first time in the country’s history, the passport portrays the nation’s identity, honoring all states
Will it get more expensive?
According to the government, the issuance fee will remain the same: currently, it is R$ 257.25 for the regular passport and R$ 334.42 for emergency cases. The fee also increases if the person fails to present the expired document.
