Traveling This Thanksgiving? The Weather May Bring Headaches

This Thanksgiving holiday travel period in the United States is expected to be the busiest in several years, with about 55.4 million people on the roads and in the skies, according to AAA.

The problem is that a strong storm system is moving across the eastern U.S. and is expected to bring storms and heavy rain to the region, causing significant impacts on Tuesday (21) and Wednesday morning (22), bringing headaches for many travelers.

The combination of rain and wind could cause disruptions at airports in major hubs like New York, Boston, and Washington, DC.

Travelers entering and leaving New York City are being advised to take extra caution. A travel advisory has been issued by the city’s emergency management agency for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The heaviest rains will fall in the city on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Wind gusts of up to 40 mph are possible.

Therefore, travelers passing through any of the city’s three airports can expect longer lines and should prepare for potential flight delays that may occur until Wednesday morning. Drivers will have to deal with slippery roads and may also face minor flooding.

These are the times you should avoid hitting the road this holiday

AAA states that Wednesday afternoon is the worst time to hit the road, with traffic 80% higher in some areas, according to traffic research firm INRIX.

The best times to travel during the holiday are Wednesday morning and Sunday morning, says AAA.
