More Than One-Third of American Workers Turn to Freelance Jobs in 2023 – The Brasilians

More Than One-Third of American Workers Turn to Freelance Jobs in 2023

The job market is rapidly transforming before our eyes. After the pandemic, a record number of American workers are embracing less conventional career paths.

This decision is mainly influenced by factors such as:

• the rising cost of living that is making it almost imperative to have a second source of income;

• Job uncertainty, as thousands of positions are threatened by AI;

• Generation Z and Millennials, who dominate the workforce in increasing numbers, tend to prioritize professional satisfaction and well-being.

It is estimated that 64 million Americans, representing 38% of the U.S. workforce, engaged in freelance work in 2023, compared to 60 million last year, according to a December report from Upwork. The study also revealed that, more importantly, freelancers contributed approximately $1.27 billion to the U.S. economy in annual earnings.

The most popular freelance activities, according to the study, were skilled knowledge services such as consulting, marketing, and IT; and influencer jobs. The influencer position gathered approximately 14.7 million professionals developing content, including live streaming, social media videos, images, and blogs.

What a timely moment to launch as a freelancer! But how exactly do you start? Here are three steps you should consider:
1. Identify a passion

A freelance job will require significant effort and some level of financial investment to take off successfully, so you need to make sure you are doing something you love. Additionally, if the freelance position is extra in relation to your daily job, you will likely have to dedicate hours that would be leisure or rest time to it. So, it’s the old saying, do something you enjoy, and you’ll never work a day in your life.
2. Research the demand

Do some research to assess your options and test the market appetite – if the market exists. Evaluate the competition and seek feedback from others by offering your services for free or at a relatively low cost to establish your presence, build word-of-mouth references, and refine your offering.
3. Create an action plan

Now it’s time to develop a solid action plan – one that is realistic enough for you to commit to, considering your current circumstances, but challenging enough to push you out of your comfort zone.

If you find yourself constantly thinking about creating a second stream of income beyond your job or even as a replacement for it in the future, now is a good time to join the millions of Americans who have already proven this year that it is indeed possible. As a freelancer, you can also enjoy financial freedom, experience a rewarding career, and be part of a revolution that is transforming the job market for everyone.
