What Are the Fastest Growing Professions in the U.S.?

The production of renewable energy will drive much of the job growth in the United States over the next decade: according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), wind turbine maintenance technicians, solar photovoltaic installers, and nurses are expected to have the highest growth rate by 2033.

The wind energy sector is a growing component of the U.S. renewable energy production, and jobs for wind turbine maintenance technicians are expected to grow more than any other occupation, 60% by 2033. Turbine technicians earned an average salary of nearly $62,000 in 2023.

The second fastest growing job is that of solar photovoltaic installer, the people who assemble and maintain solar panels. Solar energy is another growing part of renewable energy production. Installers earn an average salary of nearly $49,000.

The highest paying job among the top 20 is that of computer and information research scientists, individuals who research innovative uses for new and existing computing technologies. In 2023, their average income was $145,000.
Is there demand for medical jobs?

Nurse, the third fastest growing occupation, is one of eight health roles among the 20 fastest growing professions. The average income for this role in 2023 was just over $126,000.

Other health positions among the top 20 and their roles include:

• Medical and health services manager: plan, direct, and coordinate the business side of healthcare.

• Medical assistant: examine, diagnose, and treat patients under the supervision of a physician.

• Physical therapist assistant: help patients regain movement and control pain after injuries and illnesses, supervised by a physical therapist.

• Occupational therapy assistant: help prepare treatment rooms for occupational therapy sessions and assist occupational therapists with treatment.

• Home health and personal care aide: assist people with disabilities or chronic illnesses and monitor their condition.

• Substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselor: counseling on issues such as alcoholism, addiction, and depression.

• Epidemiologist: investigating patterns and causes of diseases and injuries to inform public health decisions.

Our pets are also receiving care: three of the 20 most important growing professions are related to veterinary care: veterinary assistants and laboratory animal caretakers, veterinary technologists and technicians, and veterinarians.
What types of occupations are adding the most jobs?

The home health and personal care aide profession is expected to have the largest number of new jobs, with 820,500 new positions projected by 2033—more than double any other occupation. In 2023, these roles earned a median average salary of $33,530.

In second place is the software developer, with an increase of 303,700 jobs. Their average income is the second highest on this list, at $132,270.

The highest paying occupation projected to add new jobs by 2033 is the computer and information systems manager, who oversees and coordinates an organization’s computer-related activities for just under $170,000.
