Brazil Expects Record International Tourism This Summer in the Southern Hemisphere

Brazil’s tourism authority, Embratur, expects the summer of 2025 to be a record-breaking season for international tourism, both in Brazil and in Rio de Janeiro. From January to March next year, 4.5 million seats will be available on international flights to Brazil, the highest number in history, according to the agency.

The countries that stand out in this aspect are from South America, with an expected 106,000 more seats from flights from Argentina, 83,000 more from Chile, and 21,000 more from Uruguay.

The city of Rio de Janeiro may also set a record for international tourists, with 991,000 international passengers expected to arrive between January and March next year, noted Embratur. This number represents a 26% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels, with an addition of 204,000 people.

This summer in Brazil, the agency expects the city to have 68 more weekly flights from South America, in addition to nine more from the USA, eight from Europe, and one from Asia.

Embratur’s president, Marcelo Freixo, celebrated the numbers during the inauguration ceremony of the first direct flight between Rio and Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, at Galeão Airport on Monday (16), offered by the foreign airline Sky Airline.

“We will break all records and reach $7 billion in international tourism – which means more jobs and income here in our city, in our state, and in our country,” he said.

The connection between Rio and Montevideo will have four weekly flights, with about 5,000 more people expected to arrive in the state capital each month.
