After three weeks hospitalized at Hospital DF Star, in Brasília, former President Jair Bolsonaro received medical discharge on the morning of this Sunday (4). He had been in the hospital since April 13, when he underwent a 12-hour surgery to remove intestinal adhesions and reconstruct the abdominal wall.
The hospital has not yet published a medical bulletin about the discharge, but images of the former president leaving the unit are circulating on social media. Bolsonaro greeted a group of supporters and left the hospital by car.
A little before the discharge, the former president used social media to thank the medical team that cared for him. The medical team was led by Cláudio Birolini, director of General Surgery at Hospital das Clínicas de São Paulo.
On Saturday (3), the medical bulletin reported improvement in his health condition, with good progress on a pasty diet, and the possibility of discharge “in the coming days.” Bolsonaro had resumed oral feeding last Tuesday (29). On Wednesday (30), he left the intensive care unit (ICU), after 18 days under intensive care.
On the morning of April 11, Bolsonaro felt severe abdominal pains at an event in Rio Grande do Norte. Initially hospitalized in Santa Cruz, in the interior of the state, the former president was transferred to Natal. The next day, he boarded an air ICU for Brasília.
This was the sixth surgery the former president has undergone since 2018, when he was the victim of a stabbing during the election campaign. All the surgeries were performed due to sequelae from the injury.
Criminal action
The first hospitalization in Rio Grande do Norte occurred on the same day that the Federal Supreme Court (STF) published the First Panel’s decision that indicted Bolsonaro and seven other allies as defendants for planning and attempting a coup d’état. The STF also opened the criminal action against the former president.
On April 23, Bolsonaro received the STF summons in the ICU at Hospital DF Star. Hours later, Bolsonaro posted on social media a video of the moment he received the court officer. For 11 minutes, the former president questions the official about the summons inside the ICU. Upon learning that the measure was ordered by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, the case rapporteur, he complained again about the minister’s conduct in the investigations.
The video prompted a statement of repudiation from entities representing court officers. On April 25, the Regional Medical Council of the Federal District announced an investigation into the entry of people into the ICU. The inquiry will cover not only the court officer’s visit but also visits by political allies during the intensive care stay.
