Amid the BRICS summit taking place in Rio de Janeiro, the President of the United States (USA), Donald Trump, threatened extra tariffs on products from countries that align with the group, formed by 11 nations, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The post was made on his Truth Social profile.
“Any country that aligns with the anti-American policies of BRICS will be taxed with an extra 10% tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump wrote.
On Sunday (6), the BRICS leaders’ statement criticized protectionist measures adopted in global trade.
“We reiterate our support for a rules-based multilateral trading system that is open, transparent, fair, inclusive, equitable, non-discriminatory, and consensual, with the WTO at its core, with special and differential treatment (S&DT) for its developing members,” the statement highlighted.
Trump, who took office in January this year, announced, right at the beginning of his term, an increase in tariffs on imported products, which generated criticism and responses from several countries.
In addition to Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS is composed of Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Egypt, and Ethiopia. Ten more countries are partners of the group: Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
