Lula expresses solidarity with STF justices after US sanctions

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed, this Saturday (19), solidarity with the justices of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) after the sanctions imposed by the United States on Alexandre de Moraes and “allies on the Court.” In a statement, the president described the measure as arbitrary and unfounded.

“My solidarity and support to the Supreme Federal Court justices affected by yet another arbitrary and completely unfounded measure from the United States government,” the president stated in a release issued by the Palácio do Planalto.

Lula emphasized that attempts to interfere in another country’s judiciary disrespect international law. “The interference of one country in another country’s justice system is unacceptable and violates the basic principles of respect and sovereignty among nations,” he added.

Finally, the president stressed that he will work to preserve democracy.

“I am certain that no type of intimidation or threat, from anyone, will compromise the most important mission of the powers and national institutions, which is to act permanently in the defense and preservation of the Democratic Rule of Law,” the text concluded.

On Friday night (18), the United States revoked the visa of Justice Alexandre de Moraes and “allies on the Court.” The measure also covers Moraes’ family members.

The announcement by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio does not specify which other STF justices were affected by the sanction. The measure was announced hours after former President Jair Bolsonaro became the target of a Federal Police (PF) operation, which conducted searches and seizures and ordered the use of an electronic ankle monitor and nighttime curfew from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
