Singer and composer Angela Ro Ro dies at 75 in Rio

Singer and composer Angela Ro Ro died on the morning of this Monday (8) in Rio de Janeiro. Hospitalized since June with a pulmonary infection, the artist did not survive the worsening of her condition.

Angela Ro Ro would have turned 76 in December. She leaves behind more than a hundred recordings across 14 solo albums, plus appearances on special compilations.

Her artistic career began in the first half of the 1970s, when she lived in England, performing in pubs and contributing harmonica to a track on Caetano Veloso’s LP Transa. Upon returning to Brazil, she took part in the 1974 Saquarema Rock Festival (RJ), where Rita Lee also performed.

Her first solo album was released in 1979 and was a hit with the song Amor, meu grande amor, which she co-wrote with Ana Terra. She earned acclaim from audiences and critics in subsequent albums, featuring title tracks like Só nos resta viver (1980), Escândalo (1981), Simples carinho (1982), which solidified her reputation as a songwriter and performer.

Angela Ro Ro played piano and was prized for her husky voice, perfect for blues and songs like Fogueira (her own composition) and Demais (Tom Jobim and Aloysio de Oliveira).

Beyond her talent, Angela Ro Ro was known for her irony, humor, and candor. She abruptly refused to record Malandragem, written for her by Roberto Frejat and Cazuza in 1988, because she disliked the song and refused to sing “Quem sabe eu ainda sou uma garotinha,” its opening line—a track that later became a hit for Cássia Eller.
