Dennis Carvalho Dies – The Brasilians

Actor and director Dennis Carvalho died last Saturday (28) at the age of 78. He was hospitalized at Hospital Copa Star, in Copacabana, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro.

The specific cause of death was not disclosed by Hospital Copa Star due to lack of family authorization. The unit stated that it did not have permission from the family to provide details about the circumstances of Carvalho’s death.

Dennis Carvalho was hospitalized in 2022 with septicemia

In December 2022, Carvalho had been hospitalized with a case of septicemia. At the time, the infectious condition responded to treatment, he showed positive clinical progress, and was discharged a few days later.

In 2023, after being discharged, the actor and director spoke about the hospitalization in an interview with the newspaper O Globo. “Very happy because I’m alive. After spending almost 20 days in a coma, die, not die, thank God, I survived. It’s a reason to celebrate,” he said.

There is no official information on any possible relation between the 2022 episode and the death that occurred in 2026.

He leaves three children: Luíza, from his marriage to actress Deborah Evelyn; Leonardo, from his union with Christiane Torloni; and Tainah, daughter of Monique Alves.

What is septicemia (sepsis)

Septicemia, now more commonly known as sepsis, is a potentially serious condition characterized by a generalized infection. The body reacts with an intense systemic inflammatory response to combat the attacking microorganism, which can impair the functioning of vital organs.

This reaction can cause a drop in blood pressure, poor cell oxygenation, and changes in blood clotting, leading, in the most severe cases, to multiple organ failure.

Sepsis usually originates from specific infection sites, such as lungs, abdomen, kidneys and bladder, skin, or central nervous system, and is mainly caused by bacteria, although fungi and other pathogens can also trigger the condition.

Risk groups include people with weakened immune systems, those with chronic diseases such as diabetes and kidney failure, as well as premature babies, elderly people over 65, victims of extensive burns and serious wounds.

A Career Spanning More Than Five Decades on TV

With more than five decades of career, Dennis Carvalho established himself as one of the most influential names in Brazilian television. He acted in 28 soap operas and directed another 36 productions, helping to shape the language and aesthetic standards of modern Brazilian soap operas.

The artist began his career in the 1960s at stations such as TV Paulista and TV Tupi, before joining TV Globo in 1975, where he remained for 47 years.

Initially hired for the first version of “Roque Santeiro” (1975), a soap opera banned by the censorship of the time, the actor accumulated memorable roles on television, in cinema, and in theater.

In theater, he was part of the cast of the musical “Hair” in 1970, while in audiovisual media he participated in nine films and stood out in television productions such as “Brega e Chique” and the series “Malu Mulher” (1979), in which he played the character Pedro Henrique.

From In Front of the Cameras to Directing Hits

The transition to directing began during the soap opera “Locomotivas” (1977), when, in addition to playing the character Netinho, he began directing scenes in the final weeks of the plot.

The official debut combining the roles of actor and director took place in 1978 in “Te Contei?”, marking the start of a phase in which he became one of the network’s main dramaturgy directors.

Carvalho became known for his collaboration with author Gilberto Braga, which resulted in landmarks of television dramaturgy such as “Vale Tudo” (1988/89), “Anos Rebeldes” (1992), and “Celebridade” (2003).

He also directed other standout productions, including “Dancin’ Days”, “O Dono do Mundo”, “Lado a Lado”, “Babilônia”, “Segundo Sol”, and “Paraíso Tropical”.
