Brazil Has 11 Airports Among the World’s Most Punctual, International Ranking Shows

Brazil has earned a prominent place in the global aviation scene, with 11 airports featured on the list of the world’s most punctual. The survey is part of the On-Time Performance Monthly Report, released in August by the international consultancy Cirium. The publication evaluated large, medium, and small terminals based on the annual number of seats offered.

According to Agência Gov, which reported the data, Cirium classifies as large airports those with capacity between 25 and 40 million seats per year. Medium ones accommodate between 15 and 25 million, and small ones, 5 to 15 million. Additionally, to be included in the ranking, terminals must register at least 90% of tracked flights, ensuring international comparability.

Highlights by Category

In the large category, Congonhas Airport (SP) reached 3rd place worldwide, with 88.62% on-time flights. Among the mediums, Brazil also shone:

• Viracopos-Campinas (SP) came in 2nd, with 93.22% punctuality;

• Brasília (DF) took 3rd, with 90.97%;

• Confins-Belo Horizonte (MG) placed 4th, with 88.70%;

• Galeão (RJ) reached 6th, with 86.50%.

Among the small airports, Santos Dumont (RJ) was the world winner, with a 95.02% index—based on the analysis of 4,930 flights. In the same category, Salvador (BA) secured 4th place, with 91.32%. The terminals of Belém (PA), Recife (PE), Florianópolis (SC), Curitiba (PR), and Porto Alegre (RS) also made the ranking, all listed among the 20 most punctual.

Government Assessment

The Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, celebrated the results.

“The presence of 11 Brazilian airports among the world’s most punctual shows the strength of our infrastructure. It is recognition of the quality of operations and the efficiency we seek to deliver to the population every day,” he stated.

Above Global Average

The study also presented international punctuality averages. Across all sizes, Brazilian airports exceeded or stayed above global indices:

• Small: Santos Dumont recorded 95% on-time flights, against a global average of 85%. Salvador also stood out with 91.32%.

• Medium: Viracopos and Brasília exceeded 90%, well above the international average of 81.4%.

• Large: Congonhas (88.62%) was above the average of 81.66%.

International Recognition

Cirium’s analysis considers data from more than 2,000 sources worldwide and measures punctuality by flights performed within the scheduled time. The methodology, which ensures global comparability, reinforces international recognition of the efficiency of Brazil’s air sector.
