Copacabana New Year’s Eve to Feature Shows by Gilberto Gil and Ney Matogrosso

The New Year’s Eve celebration on Copacabana Beach will feature shows by Gilberto Gil and Ney Matogrosso as the main attractions on Palco Rio, the principal stage, in front of the Copacabana Palace Hotel. Also performing will be Alcione, João Gomes and Iza, DJ Alok, Belo and the Beija-Flor samba school.

The Samba Stage, at the height of Rua República do Peru, will host performances by Roberta Sá, Mart’nália, Diogo Nogueira, Bloco da Preta with its new vocalist Feyjão and the Grande Rio samba school.

On the Leme Stage, dedicated to gospel music, the attractions will be Midian Lima, Samuel Messias, Thalles Roberto and the gospel pagode group Marcados. Bernardo Fellows, president of the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Tourism Company (Riotur), said the gospel segment is growing ever stronger with sold-out shows.

“It only reaffirms the need the city recognized to offer a celebration for this segment in public venues.”

All told, more than 70 attractions will perform across 13 stages throughout the city.

The fireworks display will last 12 minutes, with fireworks launched from 19 barges in the waters off Copacabana. In previous years, there were 10 barges.
