Bolsonaro Indicted by Federal Police for Attempted Coup

The Federal Police concluded its investigation into a criminal organization that allegedly acted to prevent elected president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and elected vice president Geraldo Alckmin from taking office in 2022, following the defeat of then-president Jair Bolsonaro in the presidential elections.

In a statement released on November 21, the Federal Police confirmed that the final report of the investigation was sent to the Supreme Federal Court. Among the 37 indicted for crimes such as violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, and organized crime are former president Jair Bolsonaro; former Navy commander Almir Garnier Santos; federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem (Liberal Party) and former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin); former Minister of Justice Anderson Torres; former Minister of the Institutional Security Office Augusto Heleno; Army lieutenant colonel Mauro Cid, former advisor to Bolsonaro; president of the Liberal Party Valdemar Costa Neto; and former chief minister of the Civil House and Minister of Defense Walter Souza Braga Netto.

According to the Federal Police, evidence against the indicted was collected over nearly two years through a series of investigative measures. These included telematic, telephone, banking, and tax analyses, plea bargains, search and seizure operations, and other actions authorized by the judiciary.

The investigations revealed that those involved were organized into distinct groups, each with specific responsibilities, including the Disinformation and Attack on the Electoral System Cell; the Military Incitement Cell; the Legal Cell; the Operational Cell to Support Coup Activities; the Parallel Intelligence Cell; and the Operational Cell for the Execution of Coercive Measures.

“With the submission of the report [to the Supreme Federal Court], the Federal Police concludes its investigation into the attempted coup and the violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law,” stated the police.
