USA Bids Farewell to the Copa América – The Brasilians

The atmosphere at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, was one of pure adrenaline as the tournament hosts, the United States, played their last chance to qualify for the quarter-finals against Uruguay. While the United States practically needed a victory to qualify, Uruguay only needed a draw to secure their spot in the knockout stages.

The fans, players, and coaching staff of both teams could feel the pressure and energy that were released as soon as the whistle blew and the ball was kicked in the center circle. The first half was as physical as one could expect from an apparently decisive clash for the United States. Both teams lost a player to injury in the first 45 minutes, Maxi Araujo for Uruguay and Florian Balogun for the United States, and neither team created many clear chances.

Moving into the second half, Uruguay found the back of the net in the 66th minute when Mathias Olivera scored from a rebound off Matt Turner’s gloves, putting Uruguay ahead 1-0.

The USA continued to push attackers forward, but it ultimately proved futile. The Uruguayans defended valiantly and with an intensity as if their tournament journey was at stake. In the end, they were rewarded with their third victory, and the hosts’ journey came to an end with the final whistle.

Uruguay is through to the quarter-finals and, as winners of Group C, will face the second-placed team from Group D, which will be determined tomorrow between Brazil, Colombia, and Costa Rica. The match will take place on July 6 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The United States has been eliminated from the competition.
