Leaders in AI Collaborate for Brazil’s Climate Resilience

AI/R, a global leader in technology specializing in Data, AI, and Generative AI services, announced a plan to dedicate resources to pro bono programs over the coming years, aiming to harness the power of AI and data analytics. The program is a joint effort with global technology partners such as AWS, and leading Brazilian IT service companies and universities aligned with the digital talent program +praTi, to apply the power of AI in addressing the impact of severe flooding in this South American country.

The initiative seeks a global scope, as efforts will expand and scale to support communities affected by climate change worldwide. In the last ten days, widespread flooding has overwhelmed the infrastructure of 400 cities in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state in Brazil, including Porto Alegre, its capital.

“The recent events in Brazil serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities we face due to climate change,” said Alexis Rockenbach, Global CEO of AI/R and co-founder of Compass UOL, originally from Porto Alegre. “As we deal with the immediate priority of saving lives, we also need to look to the future and use AI technologies to deeply accelerate our preparedness for severe climate events.”

In addition to providing support and investments, the new AI climate coalition is utilizing AI technologies to better prepare cities and governments to handle climate-related risks and infrastructure resilience.

To kick off the new initiative, Rockenbach committed the resources of the AI/R Group, six companies with a team of over 5,000 AI specialists and software engineers, investing in programs initially focused on four key areas:

• Advanced Predictive Models: Developing AI-driven predictive models that can accurately forecast severe weather events, enabling proactive measures to protect human lives and infrastructure.

• Infrastructure Resilience: Collaborating with engineers and experts to redesign and adapt critical infrastructure such as bridges, roads, sanitation, water, and electricity systems to make them more resilient to extreme weather conditions.

• Data-Driven Insights: Leveraging large volumes of data to gain actionable insights into climate patterns, vulnerabilities, and adaptation strategies.

• Global Collaboration: Fostering collaboration among industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers to drive innovation and implement scalable solutions worldwide.

Universities are also contributing to the collective effort

“At +praTi, we recognize the critical role of digital talent in addressing global challenges,” said Cristian Cavalheiro, president of the organization. “We are excited to contribute with our connections to universities and IT companies in Brazil and collaborate to support AI/R’s efforts in developing innovative solutions that enhance resilience and mitigate risks to human life in the face of severe weather conditions. Together, we can make a significant impact and promote positive change for communities in Brazil and beyond.”
