Madonna draws 1.6 million people to Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro

The sands of Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro welcomed at least 1.6 million people for Madonna’s concert. The number was announced by Riotur, the tourism company linked to the city hall, and exceeded the initial expectation by 100,000. The audience can be considered the largest of the singer’s entire career, as she performed in the country for the fourth time. The last was 12 years ago.

The show, which concluded the world tour ‘The Celebration’, celebrating the artist’s 40 years of career, started shortly after 10:30 PM last Saturday (4) and lasted approximately two hours.

Two Brazilian artists – Anitta and Pabllo Vittar – performed alongside the American star. There were also tributes to other Brazilians such as Renato Russo, Cazuza, Abdias do Nascimento, Paulo Freire, Pelé, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Marielle Franco, Zumbi dos Palmares, Mano Brown, Erika Hilton, Marta, Cacique Raoni, Maria Bethânia, Daniela Mercury, among others.

Although the singer used playback for most of the performance, the Queen of Pop threw herself into the choreography and energized the audience.

Her performance in Copacabana made headlines in the international press, which praised the singer for the last show of the tour and highlighted the crowd that attended the spectacle.
