Taylor Swift arrived in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday (16) for a series of shows in Brazil, and even Christ the Redeemer joined the “swiftie fever”. Fans requested it, and the monument paid tribute to the singer by “wearing” the famous t-shirt that the artist wore in “You Belong With Me”, adapted with the words “Welcome to Brazil”.
After requests to the City Hall of Rio, the “swifties” managed to implement the projection for the pop artist.
“Welcome to Brazil,” it read in English, along with the names of the 27 states of the country.
The rector of the Christ the Redeemer sanctuary, Omar Raposo, responded to the request with a challenge on Instagram: to raise 300,000 reais for charity in exchange for the welcome message.
The response was so impressive that it crashed the fundraising website, and the campaign was extended until Sunday, the last day of Swift’s three-night stay in Rio.
According to the organizers, despite technical issues, the campaign raised over R$180,000 in less than 24 hours, an amount that will be used to donate food baskets on World Day of the Poor, on November 19, an initiative launched by Pope Francis.
