Amazonia is based on the premise that environmental issues require ecological knowledge as well as cultural articulation. Berta Sichel, curator; and Patricia Capa, assistant curator, draw much of the conceptual structure of this project from the book Ecocriticism by Greg Garrad, a critical survey of the various “positions” within current thought on the natural environment. The 11 international artists included in the exhibition incorporate Garrad’s theoretical foundation, using mixed media and documentary practices to explore the ecological, tribal, journalistic, and spiritual narratives of the Amazon.
