After a meeting with elected president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, singer Margareth Menezes confirmed that she accepted the invitation to be the Minister of Culture, a department that will be recreated in 2023.
“It was a very encouraging conversation for people in culture. We talked, and I accepted the challenge. I see this as a mission because it was a surprise for me too,” said the singer.
The Bahia native is the first woman announced for Lula’s ministerial team. “The president said that it is of great importance to him, and that he wants to build a strong Ministry of Culture to meet the aspirations of the cultural people and Brazil for the potential of our culture,” she added.
During the campaign, Lula promised the creation of regional cultural committees to promote local artists and initiatives that “move away from the Rio-São Paulo axis.”
To journalists, the future minister also stated that it will be necessary, first of all, to “raise” the ministry and study sectoral areas to “make Brazil’s culture recognized nationally and internationally.”
