Ranked by Rolling Stone as the third greatest Brazilian singer of all time, Ney Matogrosso emerged in the 70s with Secos e Molhados, but his extravagant theatricality on stage, eye-catching costumes, and unique high countertenor voice made him one of those distinctly unique artists to arise in Latin America in the 20th century. Winner of the Latin Grammy for Lifetime Achievement, Matogrosso will perform in Central Park during a rare visit to the U.S. The self-proclaimed “pachanga folk” band Francisco El Hombre created their latest album Casa Francisco in isolation under the watchful eye of video cameras, streaming the production live as a pseudo-reality show. Their 2017 song “Triste, Louca ou Má” was nominated for a Latin Grammy. The show also features two artists from the motherland: Fado Bicha, from Lisbon, a queer, anti-racist, and feminist duo that pushes the boundaries of traditional fado and challenges the political status quo in Portugal, and a DJ set by Surma, a one-woman band who handles a dozen instruments to accompany an ethereal voice.
