When their music conquered Brazil and the world in 2002, the Tribalistas sang, in the final track of their successful first CD/DVD, that “tribalist is an anti-movement / that disappears in the next moment.” However, in the 15 years that followed, exactly the opposite has
been confirmed. The partnership between Marisa Monte, Carlinhos Brown, and Arnaldo Antunes not only strengthened but also produced a new album last year, in which they confirm in song the emotional-musical bond that unites them: “we are many when we are together / we are one.” And to celebrate the joy in this union, the trio has now embarked on their highly anticipated first tour.
Salvador – the city where Brown was born and where the three artists gathered to compose the tracks of their latest work – was chosen as the starting point for the tour. The trio performed in 10 other Brazilian cities in stadiums and large concert halls. In the fall of 2018, they did their first European tour with shows in Portugal, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, England, Belgium, and Italy.
Released in 2002, the sales of the CD/DVD Primeiro dos Tribalistas reached the mark of three million and was an instant phenomenon, not only in Brazil but also in other countries, including France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Argentina. They won the Latin Grammy for Best Portuguese Language Pop Album and were also nominated for Album of the Year and Record of the Year for the hit song “Ja Sei Namorar.”
Tuned in, as they are, with all the technological advances of recent years, two weeks before the release of the Tribalistas’ latest album in August 2017, Marisa Monte, Arnaldo Antunes, and Carlinhos Brown surprised their fans with an online performance of four of their brand new songs. The live broadcast occurred simultaneously on the artists’ fan page and had 5.62 million views from followers in 52 countries,
including Brazil, all of Latin America, the United States, France, Spain, Japan, Russia, and even Pakistan. The new album also received a Latin Grammy nomination for “Aliança” as Best Song in Portuguese.
It was an immediate success. According to Spotify data, the release of the four singles produced the best performance in the MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) category since the platform arrived in Brazil in 2014. All four entered the Spotify Top 100, and there was a 65% increase in the group’s monthly listeners. Considering only the age group of 23-27 years, the increase was 73%.
