On Thursday (July 12), Brazilian national soccer player Marta was named the new ambassador for UN Women, a position from which she can advocate for gender equality in the sports world and beyond.
Considered by many to be the greatest female player of all time, Marta is the all-time leading scorer in Women’s World Cup history and has been named the world’s best player five times.
The Orlando Pride forward had previously contributed to the UN as part of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
“Marta Vieira da Silva is an exceptional role model for women and girls
around the world. Her own life experience tells a powerful story of what can be achieved with determination,” said UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.
“We look forward to working closely with Marta to bring the transformative power of sport to more women and girls, and to rapidly build equality,” she added.
In a statement, Marta said she felt honored and committed to working to see “women and girls around the world have the same opportunities as men and boys to develop their potential.”
“Today, women around the world are proving they can succeed in roles and positions previously held by men,” she said.
